THE COMPETITION : 3 Prophecy of Glory

.

Sunlight shines on the hills over there,

Above Beulah, between heaven and earth.

Watch it alight upon Allt-y-gest, upon Garn Wen.

It strokes the steep valley sides with glory.

We wear the crowns that others have made.

A moment in the sun, a hope it might remain.

The rivers are nearly dry here now,

Their voices silenced, their motion stayed.

If it rains in the mountains

The rivers shall rejoice here.

Thunder in the hills,

And then floods will be upon us

In the parched plains.

This glory steps up to us

Like a gift from the Tylwyth Teg,

A moment of gold in the late afternoon,

Before groping twilight shrouds in stillness

All but the endless dancing midges.

Sunlight now is on the bright brow of the hill.

Sing your song, then return to silence.

All the waters of the world are one river.

A moment of sparkling beauty is shared by all,

The passing sunlight, the rising moon,

The susurration of a million stars.

We rise and fall in a perpetual choir.

Sing to your soul, and be still.

MAY MORNING ROAD

I shall set before me this road,

Laid out across the misty cool morning.

I shall set it to wander between

What I know and what the world knows.

The light that pushes through the stretched hopes

Stretches green and upwards

Where the clouds melt and thin

To impossible blue.

I shall tie this road here

And let it wander between it all.

Gods would fight an eternity to be here.

They would gather murmuring like bees

To be fed on this transient translucence.

It moves lightly, this road, with nowhere to go.

It revolves around its own curiosity,

A certain lightness, familiar but untrodden.

It tastes a certain way, delicate between the cuckoos.

It will go a distance

Before it finds

It has not moved at all.

Admittance to the centre of all things.

It shimmers with breath,

This May morning road.

THE HEALED SKY

The healed sky

Blue as the calm gaze

Of the Medicine Buddha.

May all beings find peace.

The healed sky.

Wherever we go

The chanting of honey bees.

The healed sky.

A deeper peace creeps in,

Silence no longer a threat.

The healed sky.

Eternal mind

Ever returning to life.

CHAPEL OAKS

Scattering dark fingered roads

Across bright dazzled morning.

.

Jackdaws coming and going

like second thoughts.

.

Snow picks out the distant hills

As if they were unattainable heaven.

.

Cold clouds drift on slow sunlight.

.

The in-dwelling silence is a song

Stretched out to eternity.

.

It is what the red kites,

What the ravens, wheel and dance upon,

Uplifted by delight.

.

The pain of frozen air

Is how we know

we are alive.

CHAPEL OAKS (2)

A murmuration of starlings

A murder of crows

A ricochet of jackdaws

A damnation of preachers

A singing throne of oaks.

.

The bones of the snow

On a bitter wind.

.

March morning sky

Churning the bright butter of glory.

.

The hands of trees reach out,

Shaking in eternal prayer.

TALIESIN ECHOES

“I have been the radiance of stars”

Standing still feeling the heat leave.

Pierced, made nothing, made all

By the silent kissing of a million stars.

Hanging headfirst over a boiling void of words,

Whispered, muttered down the centuries to now.

How beauty strikes us dumb

And then, how pain creeps in.

The holding and the letting go that

We never learn.

What the river says, what the river says.

Ye warriors, so like primroses.

Ye poets, so like hedgerows.

DHRUPAD 23 ( Pema Özer in Autumn drift)

Slow slow slowly now

slowly now taste the shapes the sounds as they form

as they fall as they flow slow with the colours of autumn

slow the autumn falling slow to mists and coming going coming mists

slow no need to seek the means the meaning to move on.

Sun will not set sun will not rise sun standing still at midnight at midday

as if as if that sage, enjoying his beer enjoying the warmth of a lazy afternoon

dusty road in the mountains distant waterfalls sheep bleating

stop stop stop the sun and hold it there, slow slow to savour moments

out of inside of within wrapped up in time time time, the breath slow slow,

the words slow slow, the same the same the same, but not exactly not precisely,

not a landscape flickers by a landscape moulded forgot seen forgot seen seen

inhabited become sun-filled,

and the trees all autumn and slow breath, fall of leaves and drifting mists

and star-filled, star-filled, the river roaring darkness like that, like that,

that is like this, like this, slow slow unfolding with no end a measured walk

a stroll another beer,

watching time relax

and stay a while

THE TOWERS OF SUMMER

clouds roll

mixed with sunlight

slowly down

the side of Y Garn Dwad.

the hay is in now

so let it rain a warm rain.

now, now, everything green

reaches upward in one great exhale.

the towers of summer stretch out, bow down.

there is thunder

in the distance, so they say,

and the rivers will soon be filled again.

the surface of Llyn Berwyn though,

shall not be troubled for long:

it will return to its quiet reflection

of hills and cloud,

the brown trout

hardly noticing

a world

that cannot decide

between this and that.

held firm it is, unperturbed,

the lake that lies

in earth’s firm

folded hands.

SUMMER RIVER

Golden edged

Summer river

Rocks cooling their toes.

Golden river

Summer gnats

All diminuendo

Cooling their old bones

Grey worn rocks in summer heat

Squatting in midstream

Soft summer rivers

Water folding up sunlight

Shoals of darting fish

High summer

We see them gather

To cool their feet:

These venerable rocks

Dreaming in the slow waters

Time flows silent

By the river side

Green Clouds

Green clouds filter long light

Nodding grasses sway in flowering rainbows

The sky spreads out from edge to edge

The longest day lies blessed in sunshine.

Led away

The passage of time and the passage of light

And the drift of thought.

Cloud cover comes and goes,

A brightening and a darkening.

Birdsong and other rivers.

A convergence and a dissipation.

They all return to the one horizon,

Led away by song and by the rolling hills.
